Shanzhai Lyric és una recerca sobre un cas d'aberració cultural a la cruïlla de logística i lingüística global.
Shanzhai Lyric és el nom del projecte que les artistes Ming Lin i Alexandra Tatarsky han triat per endinsar-se en el fenomen de les falsificacions o imitacions de productes de grans marques a la Xina (o fenomen shanzhai), que elles conceben com "un poema col·lectiu i anònim que emergeix dels detritus del consumisme". Del text al tèxtil i viceversa, entre la inventiva popular i les cadenes de subministraments globals, practiquen una estratègia estètica en la qual la imitació, l'error i allò absurd interrompen les forces de la mercantilització, revelant al mateix temps l'artifici de les jerarquies mundials de la moda.
“Shanzhai Lyric is the name of both the project and the phenomenon we are trying to identify—an anonymously and collectively authored ongoing poem emerging out of the detritus of consumerism. The name Shanzhai Lyric itself can be read as a kind of bootleg, eliding distinction as an attempt at expressing solidarity with the aesthetic philosophy and politics of this hybrid English while not claiming ownership over the found phrases that we are gathering as our subject.
We are less interested in producing our own bootlegs than in identifying shanzhai strategies and sharing them across various platforms through experiments in publication, performance, curation, archive, installation, and conversation. Our aim is to place shanzhai lyrics in dialogue with other poetic and artistic lineages that also experiment with mimicry, wordplay, poetic plagiarism, and nonsense as subversive methods. We do this in a very physical sense, weaving two main threads by which textile becomes text and text becomes textile.”
A The Influencers 2019 Ming Lin i Alexandra Tatarsky presentaran el seu projecte amb una conferència performativa al CCCB Centre de Cultura Contemporània i també dirigiran un taller de creació experimenta amb estudiants locals, en col·laboració amb Escola Massana (Barcelona).
